Susan Collins, Republican, of Bangor, ME; born in Caribou, ME, December 7, 1952; education: graduated, Caribou High School, 1971; B.A., magna cum laude, Phi Beta Kappa, St. Lawrence University, Canton, NY; awards: Outstanding Alumni Award, St. Lawrence University, 1992; professional: staff director, Senate Subcommittee on the Oversight of Government Management, 1981-87; for 12 years, principal advisor on business issues to former Senator William S. Cohen; Commissioner of Professional and Financial Regulation for Maine Governor John R. McKernan, Jr., 1987; New England administrator, Small Business Administration, 1992-93; appointed Deputy Treasurer of Massachusetts, 1993; executive director, Husson College Center for Family Business, 1994-96; committees: Armed Services; chair, Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs; Special Committee on Aging; elected to the U.S. Senate on November 5, 1996; reelected to each succeeding Senate term.
